Students from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) embarked on an industrial trip to Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and NINANI Group (INNOVA DDB, Rezults Advertising, TouchPoint Magna Carta), offering them first-hand information regarding TV/Radio production and creative agency practices.
At GBC, the group was guided through the various departments of GTV, with the Deputy Director of GBC, George Lomotey, sharing how the corporation has struggled to maintain its viewership in the face of growing competition. Mr. Lomotey talked about how the emergence of private media in Ghana has led to increased competition for viewership and advertising revenue.
The trip continued with a visit to NINANI Group (INNOVA DDB, Rezults Advertising, TouchPoint Magna Carta), a leading marketing communications and advertising conglomerate. The Head of Research, Mr. Bismark, discussed the impact of COVID-19 on agency practice, which forced the organization to implement a hybrid work schedule which persists even after the pandemic.
Students were briefed on a number of topics, including copywriting strategies, the anatomy of a creative agency, media performance marketing, pitching trends, and advertising copy production. Students interacted with the resource persons to deepen their understanding of the field.
NINANI Group (INNOVA DDB, Rezults Advertising, TouchPoint Magna Carta) works with prominent clients such as MTN, GB Foods, HD Plus, and Fiesta Condoms. Assistant Production Manager, Bright Elikem, outlined the agency’s approach to developing creative concepts for clients’ advertising campaigns, explaining that they employ a combination of creativity, market research, collaboration, and testing to develop effective and innovative concepts.
Senior Accounts Manager, Mr. Maxwell Adika, expanded on INNOVA DDB’s services, highlighting their expertise in public relations and media consulting and media buying services.
This industrial trip provided valuable insights for UCC Communication Studies students, exposing them to the realities and challenges faced by media and advertising professionals, while also showcasing the diverse range of skills and services these companies offer.
The students were accompanied by two lecturers and an administrator.
